As Old as Methuselah

GENESIS 5:27

Methuselah was Noah’s great-great-grandpa, and many believe he’s the oldest man in recorded history. The Genesis account tells us Methuselah lived to be 969 years old. (More impressive than his longevity, he was still fathering sons when he was 187 years old.) Methuselah has become the proverbial symbol of longevity.

The expression “as old as Methuselah” stretches back as far as the fourteenth century, which makes the phrase almost as old as the man was himself. Ironically, when compared to other ancient Near Eastern writings that reference the antediluvian (preflood) kings, others lived for thousands of years. This means that, at least by some standards of record keeping, Methuselah was not the oldest person in history.

We have no way to know how years were counted back then, but given that Genesis goes to great length to factor the ages into Noah’s genealogy, it’s interesting to attempt the math. Apparently, Methuselah would have still been alive as Noah was boarding the animals onto the ark. Sadly, he died the same year the flooding began.
